Why You Can't Understand Your Emotions (And How to Start Healing)

Someone trying to express and understand their emotions

Sometimes the hardest part of healing isn't feeling your emotions—it's knowing what you're actually feeling.

Have you ever been asked, "How are you feeling?" and answered:

"I don't know."

Not because you didn't want to answer, but because you genuinely couldn't.

If so, you're not alone.

I have said "I don't know" and  "I'm fine" many time's and it's not that I was lying it's just I wasn't stopping to get to understand my emotions and sit with them because the easiest way was to just numb them and to say I'm alright.

Many people grow up learning how to hide emotions rather than understand them. We become experts at staying busy, distracting ourselves, or pretending everything is okay. Over time, we lose the ability to recognise what our emotions are trying to tell us.

The good news is that emotional awareness isn't something you're born with—it's a skill you can develop.

Today, we're going to explore why understanding your emotions feels so difficult and introduce a simple framework that can help you begin.

Why It's So Hard to Understand Your Emotions

1. You were taught to ignore them.

Many of us heard messages like:

• "Stop crying."

• "You're too sensitive."

•"Be strong."

• "Get over it."

Even when these words came from people who cared about us, they taught us that emotions were something to hide instead of understand.

Over time, we stop asking:

"What am I feeling?"

and start asking:

"How can I stop feeling this?"

2. You confuse thoughts with emotions.

Many people say:

"I feel like I'm failing."

But that's actually a thought.

An emotion might be:

•  Sad

•  Ashamed

• Anxious

• Lonely

• Frustrated

Learning to separate thoughts from emotions is one of the first steps toward emotional clarity.

3. You've been surviving for so long.

When life feels overwhelming, your brain focuses on getting through the day.

Survival leaves little room for reflection.

Sometimes emotional numbness isn't because you don't have feelings.

It's because your mind is protecting you from becoming overwhelmed.

Healing Ground Studio Framework:

The Emotional Check-In

Instead of trying to "fix" your emotions immediately, try understanding them first.

Step 1 — Notice

Pause.

Without judging yourself, ask:

"What am I feeling right now?"

Even if the answer is simply:

"I'm overwhelmed."

that's a beginning.

Step 2 — Name

Try giving the emotion a name.

Instead of saying:

"I feel bad."

Be more specific.

Am I...

• disappointed?

• anxious?

• embarrassed?

• lonely?

• guilty?

Naming emotions reduces confusion and increases self-awareness.

Step 3 — Understand

Ask yourself:

• What happened before I felt this?

• What might have triggered it?

• What need isn't being met?

Curiosity is far more helpful than self-criticism.

Step 4 — Respond

Not every emotion needs to disappear immediately.

Sometimes the healthiest response is:

• resting

journaling

• taking a walk

• talking to someone you trust

• setting a boundary

Healing begins when we respond intentionally instead of reacting automatically.

Common Mistakes People Make

Mistake 1

Believing every emotion is a problem.

Emotions aren't enemies.

They're information.

Mistake 2

Trying to stay positive all the time.

Real healing includes making space for uncomfortable emotions.

Ignoring them doesn't make them disappear.

Mistake 3

Judging yourself for what you feel.

Instead of saying:

"I shouldn't feel this way."

Try asking:

"What might this emotion be trying to tell me?"

That small shift changes everything.

Practical Exercise

The next time you notice a strong emotion, take one minute and answer these four questions.

1. What am I feeling?

2. What happened just before I felt this?

3. What might this emotion need?

4. What's one healthy action I can take today?

Small moments of awareness create lasting emotional growth.

Final Thoughts

Healing doesn't begin when your emotions disappear.

It begins when you become curious about them.

You don't need to understand everything overnight.

Start by noticing.

Then naming.

Then understanding.

Then responding with kindness instead of criticism.

One emotion.

One moment.

One step at a time.

Reflection

Let's check in with ourselves...

What's one emotion you've been struggling to understand recently?

Instead of judging it, spend a few minutes becoming curious about it.

That curiosity may be the beginning of your healing journey.

Healing starts with understanding yourself one moment at a time.
